Instruments!

Watch this video about where each instrument is positioned during a performance and some of the amazing skill some instrumentalists have!

The Trumpet

The Trumpet is in the brass family ( is the smallest instrument in the family) and in a orchestra it has the job of playing the  melodies and sometimes solos. Did you know the trumpet is one of the oldest instruments as one was found in Tutankhamun tomb?  You play the trumpet by holding it horizontally, and blowing lips into the mouthpiece, and pressing down the three valves at different times to change the pitch.

Average Cost: £99- £3400 (depending of what type you get)                                 Year Invented: 1500BC

The Violin

The violin is part of the string family and is the smallest instrument as well as the highest pitched. There is also more violins in the orchestra then any of instruments (there can be up to 30!) You play a violin by resting it on your chin and left shoulder and press down on the strings with the bow (or plucking the strings with your fingers.)

Average cost: £200-£2000 (again depending on what type you get)

Year invented: 16th century

The Piano

The piano is part of the percussion family although there is arguments to say it is part of the string family. You play the piano by hitting the 88 white and black keys with your fingers (which suggest it is a percussion instrument). However, when you press the keys they lift up a hammer which hits a string which produces the 'piano sound' (which suggests it is also in the string family.) What family do you think it's in? During the orchestra the piano works with the harmony but also it used as a solo instrument.

Average cost: £2000- £20,000!

Year Invented: 1709
